Green Computing Is Equivalent of Energy Saving

Green computing, we have been hearing these words without knowing their meaning. Well here is the simple definition: saving energy which gets wasted through improper use of computers.

We have heard a lot about movements like reducing the use of environmentally hazardous materials like CFCs, promoting the use of recyclable materials, minimizing use of non-biodegradable components, and encouraging use of sustainable resources. Green computing is a very much like this, this is a way to using computing resources efficiently.

Use of computer is growing enormously and thus brought a dramatic increase in energy consumption, putting negative pressure on environment and our Computer's budget. The reason is not only those everyday lots of computers are purchased and are used but the way we use the computer leads to waste of energy consumption. Research found that our computers are running without any use and left on whole day needlessly. This increases loss of electricity and of course our bill at time of Recession.

I can understand that we cant change our bad habits easily but then also if you want to contribute in green computing movement then here are some tips:

1. Some people find that screen saver are cool but the fact is, if you screen saver is appearing on your screen more than 5 minutes, you are wasting energy.

2. Don't keep your computer on unless you dont require access to your e-mails or other resources.

3. Try to do all your activities in a specific time slot, so that you can switch off your computer rest of the time.

4. Try to switch off server monitors or servers in night or weekends.

5. Laptops by design are more efficient users of electricity, so if you own both a desktop and a laptop, use the laptop as much as you can.

These are some tips from my side. You can add your views on this and give gentle reminder to your co-workers and we all can improve green computing.
